Grease Pencil was beginning to make waves in the Blender community. It had been widely anticipated, and back then, was only available in the 2.8 beta release. Inktober is a drawing prompt challenge started in 2009 by Jake Parker. Back then, the official list of prompts would be posted in early September, and you’d have 31 days to complete as many of the prompts in the medium of your choice.
I was giving a talk at the Official Blender Conference that year, so I brought along a drawing tablet with my macbook. I had decided to use Grease Pencil as the tool that year, because you really get to know a tool if you immerse yourself in a dedicated task.
I was also dabbling with Patreon at the time, so I used this as promotional content. I’m still pretty proud of many of these small sketches, even if some of the humor has dulled a bit. I like to see this as a snapshot of what was relevant around that time.
Inktober still continues, and you can join in each October, or take on the weekly challenge for the entire year. There are also many other prompt lists around the same time, so if you’ve got a creative block, I highly encourage you to seek one out, and stick with it.
