Looking back on PANELS – my first course on creating a comic in Blender

In 2022, I completed a full start-to-finish course using Blender’s Grease Pencil to create a comic for CG Cookie. It was my first big task for the company – now the education arm of Autotroph. The results for the course as well as the finished comic exceeded my expectations. I put everything into the production to make sure all techniques, tips and methods were the most up-to-date, easy to follow and well researched as possible.

You can actually download the comic FREE from the CG Cookie website to see the results, but students were creating some awesome work of their own – even years later. One notable artwork came from John Nyquist who drew this AMAZING Amazing Spiderman after taking the course.

Even with the changes and improvements that have updated Grease Pencil since, he managed to follow along and produce something special. You can check out his post on the CG Cookie community boards and see some of his progress!

This course is available to CG Cookie members, and for individual purchase via Superhive. In spite of being a little outdated in terms of the toolset, there is plenty of relevant and evergreen information in the course, as well as reusable assets such as page templates.
