    BCON-LA – Storyboarding Presentation

On April 19th, I attended the inaugural BCON-LA hosted by CG Cookie (for whom I work for as an instructor). I presented a talk on Storyboarding in 3D Space using Blender, and how it fits into a Blender-specific pipeline. It was well-attended, and while only the audio from the original footage could be salvaged, it gave me an opportunity to add in all the animated content I could not show live during the presentation.

  • DRAW!

    DRAW!

DRAW! is a new FREE course from CG Cookie which will give you all the basics for understanding and using Grease Pencil. This course will serve as a basis for some up-coming courses on concept art, and eventually storyboarding!

MODIFY – a new CG Cookie Course

I completed my second course for CG Cookie this year. It is a comprehensive guide to Blender’s Modifiers. Honestly, it was a daunting task, but I managed to create a comprehensive guide to all the main modifiers in Blender. These can be referenced at any time my students, whenever they require a primer on a particular modifier, or if they just want to see what it does.

MODIFY is now streaming on cgcookie.com https://b3d.cgcookie.com/oblQ7A and is also available on Blender Market https://b3d.cgcookie.com/fzfhCi

  • DeNoise Podcast

    DeNoise Podcast

So one of my recent projects with CG Cookie was producing the DeNoise podcast. It was a few months of wrangling the team to help test a method of recording; figuring out best practices for audio and video capture, and eventually editing the content into a coherent product. Jonathan Lampel took over at the end, and did an amazing job of setting up the RSS feed, publishing it all to platforms such as Spotify and iTunes, and other podcast platforms.

I’m really proud of this one! You should totally give it a listen. Here is a link to the CG Cookie DeNoise landing page, but searching “DeNoise Podcast” wherever you listen to Podcasts should get you there.

  • PANELS

    PANELS

In 2022, I completed a full start-to-finish course using Blender’s Grease Pencil to create a comic for CG Cookie. The results for the course as well as the finished comic exceeded my expectations. I put everything into the production to make sure all techniques, tips and methods were the most up-to-date, easy to follow and well researched as possible.

It is currently available to CG Cookie members, as well as on Blendermarket as a stand-alone course.

  • Officially an Instructor at CG Cookie!

Officially an Instructor at CG Cookie!

So I’ve been a bit quiet on the Youtube and blogging front, but there’s a very good reason. After months of working with CG Cookie on a yet-to-be-released project, I’ve been brought on as an instructor. I will be producing a couple of courses to be released later this year, focusing on Grease Pencil, comic creation and storyboarding. It’s pretty exciting stuff!

If you’d like to check out my new instructor page over on the official site, it’s here: https://cgcookie.com/p/instructor-paul-caggegi

Pavla Karon wrote a really nice article as an introduction there too https://cgcookie.com/posts/welcoming-paul-caggegi-cg-cookie-s-new-blender-instructor

  • Mini Cooper 60th Anniversary comics

    Mini Cooper 60th Anniversary comics

Earlier this year, I received an email from BMW with an interesting request. The Mini Cooper was first designed 60 years ago, and to commemorate the occasion, BMW wanted to release a book in which people’s personal stories would be illustrated as comics.

They had found me via my Australian Cartoonist Association Artist page and requested a test strip to see if I could produce the style they were after. I produced this short, four panel comic based on the supplied text.

On the strength of that, I got the job, and produced 6 more which would go in the book.

The process was a huge learning curve for me. I am not a car guy. I barely know anything about them, save to drive my kids around in one. I began to learn the difference between specific models, and came up with a method of rendering 3D cars to insert to 2D drawings. At the time, I was developing a shader to do this task. I called it the Manga Shader, and through further development, I turned it into a commercial tool for other Blender artists wishing to create similar comic-style effects for themselves.

    The Manga Shader – v3.5

I composited the renders into the comics which were laid out in Clip Studio Pro.

Here’s a quick demo of some animation I did to bring one comic to life for my 2020 showreel.

I received a cope of the completed book, which featured several other stories, artwork and photos from Mini Cooper fans from around the country.

    Eevee Toon Shader Node group

I’ve hit over 2000 subscribers on Youtube! As a special treat, I have created a toon shader for Blender’s new Eevee render engine. The file also has an extra scene and a compositing set up to allow for Freestyle rendering.

UPDATE: Freestyle now works with Eevee! Download the second working file which includes a freestyle pass over the eevee shaders.
